  • November 18: David Dotson is born to parents William and Matilda Watson in Tennessee.

1850

  • The United States Federal Census taken on October 22nd in Grainger County, Tennessee shows 9 year old David, living with his parents William and Matilda and many siblings. His father William is a farmer.

1860

  • The United States Federal Census taken on August 23rd in Grainger County, Tennessee shows 19 year old David living with his widowed mother, Matilda, and family.

  • November 30: David fought in the Battle of Franklin. He was wounded.
  • December 5: David’s foot is amputated.
  • December:  Appears on a register of prisoners of war of the Army of the Cumberland.  Captured: Franklin, Tenn.  When Captured:  December 17. 
  • December 25: David, age 24, is at No. 1 U.S.A. General Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee.  Injury: “Ball entered immediately over the inner side of right foot near the articulation of the middle tarsus with metatarsal bone and passed directly through the foot.  Operation “Amputation right foot by Choparts method.”

1865

  • May 6: Forwarded from Nashville, Tennessee to Louisville, Kentucky.
  • May 10:  Arrived at Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky.
  • June 16:  Released from Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky after taking the oath of allegiance.   His Oath of Allegiance lists David M. Dotson’s personal description. Place of Residence: Rutledge, Tennessee, Complexion: Dark,  Hair: Dark,  Eyes:  Dark,  Height: 5ft 9 ½ in.

1867

  • January 26: David marries Louisa Elizabeth McAnally in Grainger County, Tennessee.

1870

  • The United States Federal Census taken on August 23rd in Grainger County, Tennessee shows David, a farmer, and Eliza (Louisa) living with their 2 year old daughter Sarah Matilda. Also living in the same household is David’s mother Matilda, 65 yrs old, and perhaps her mother in law Sarah Dotson, 82 yrs old.

1880

  • The United States Federal Census taken on June 5th in Grainger County, Tennessee shows David, a farmer, and Louisa living with their Daughters, Harriet Nancy, age 27, Luvernia, 22, Mary, 18 and Loria, 13.

1920

1924
