Events at The Carter House and Carnton Plantation provide opportunities for exploring these historic sites in a whole different way. From the Carnton Sunset Concert Series to Blue & Gray Days, there is something for everyone.

2016 Calendar of Events

Hands on History – Valentine’s Day Program
February 13, 2016
10 am – 12 pm
Children will enjoy making old-fashioned Valentine cards to send to their loved ones and decorating a special box to keep their very own valentines in.  We will look at authentic Valentines sent from soldiers and from their loved ones back home. Lecture: The Civil Rights Act of 1875
February 18, 2016
6 pm
Join us for an evening lecture at the Fleming Center at Carnton with speaker Eric A. Jacobson discussing the Civil Rights Act of 1875 and how it was later overturned by the Supreme Court. Jacobson will examine the turbulent years that followed and how it is connected to the 1950s and 1960s. This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited to the first 100 guests.

Vintage Base Ball

The field adjacent to Carnton Plantation is the home field of the Franklin Farriers, our local vintage base ball team. Bring out your lawn chairs or blankets and take in a base ball game or two played by 1860s rules. Read more about vintage base ball here.

Hands on History – Digging Up the Past

10 am – 12 pm
Children will have the opportunity to do their own archeological dig! After their dig we will have a scavenger hunt of the grounds around Carnton. Reservations are required and the cost is $15/child. Please contact Angell Wallace at (615) 794-0903 or angell@boft.org.

McGavock Dinner

The McGavock Dinner is our special way of honoring major donors of the Battle of Franklin Trust.  At this annual black tie event held at Carnton Plantation, guests will enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a gourmet dinner.  Reservations are required.  Please contact Brittany Mayfield at (615) 794-0903 or brittany@boft.org for more information.

Inaugural Carrie’s Crawfish Boil

This inaugural event is inspired by Carrie McGavock’s family home in Thibodaux, Louisiana along the banks of Bayou Lafourche - approximately 60 miles west of New Orleans. Join us for an afternoon of creole food and regional music. Buy your tickets here!

Boy and girls ages 6 - 12 are invited to join us as we explore 19th century soldier and civilian life through activities, games, and re-enactor demonstrations. Carnton Plantation serves as a unique venue for friends and families to relax on the lawn and listen to some of area’s most talented musicians. The gates open at 4:30 pm and the music lasts from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Tickets may be purchased either in advance or at the door. Guests are welcome to pack picnic dinners or take advantage of on-site food and beverage vendors. Check back soon for more information!

Descendants’ Reunion
September 23 – 25, 2016
The Battle of Franklin Trust periodically hosts Descendants’ Reunions.  The event will allow descendants of soldiers who fought in the Battle of Franklin, as well as those descended from families who lived in Franklin during the Civil War, to gather together and experience the history of their ancestors.  Registration is required.  To receive more information about this event, please complete a Descendant Information Form available here:  http://www.boft.org/descendants.htm.

Blue & Gray Days
November 4-5, 2016
Blue & Gray Days draws hundreds of school children and adult spectators every year.  Hosted by both The Carter House and Carnton Plantation, guests will meet Civil War re-enactors and get hands-on experience with clothes, trades, and weapons of the past.  This living history experience is the perfect field trip and great for families.  For additional details or to make field trip reservations, please contact Angell Wallace at (615) 794-0903 or angell@boft.org.

152nd Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin – Illumination
November 30, 2016
To commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Franklin, 10,000 luminaries, representing the casualties of the battle, will be lit at dusk. This event is free to the public. 

Hands On History – Christmas in Carrie’s Attic
December 17, 2016
10 am – 12 pm
