  • March 25:  James marries Sarah Baughn in Fayette County, Ohio.

  • July 25:  The United States Federal Census taken in Wayne Township, Auglaize County, Ohio shows James, a farmer, and Sarah living with their two young children.

1860

  • June 14:  The United States Federal Census taken in Wayne Township, Auglaize County, Ohio shows James, a farmer, and Sarah living with their eight children.

1863 

  • June: James registers for the Civil War draft in Auglaize County, Ohio.

1864 

  • September 19: James Gossard enlists in the US Army.  ***Brother Philip enlisted 2 days earlier on September 17.***
  • November 30:  James fights in the Battle of Franklin. His brother Philip is wounded and killed.

1865 

  • May 25:  James is mustered out of the US Army in Albany, New York.
