  • Elmer Dayton is born to Sheldon and Pheobe Dayton in Ashtabula County, OH.

1850

  • October 29: The U.S. Federal Census taken in Andover, Ashtabula County, OH shows 12-year-old Elmer living with his parents and siblings. His father, Sheldon, is a farmer.

1860  

  • July 19: The U.S. Federal Census taken in Dorset Township, Ashtabula County, OH shows 22-year-old Elmer living with his parents and siblings. His father, Sheldon, is a farmer.  

1862  

  • August 16: 24-year-old Elmer Dayton enlisted in the U.S. Army.       

1864  

  • May 19:  Elmer is promoted to Full Corporal.
  • November 30: Elmer is wounded by gun fire in the Battle of Franklin. He is evacuated with his men and transported to General Hospital No. 19 in Nashville.  
  • December 6: Elmer Dayton dies of his wounds in Nashville, TN. He is buried at the National Cemetery in Nashville. He was 26 years old.
