  • March 25:  James married Sarah Baughn in Fayette County, Ohio.

  • July 25:  The U.S. Federal Census enumerated in Wayne Township, Auglaize County, OH showed James, a farmer, and Sarah living with their two young children.

1860

  • June 14:  The U.S. Federal Census taken in Wayne Township, Auglaize County, OH showed James, a farmer, and Sarah living with their eight children.

1863 

  • June: James registered for the Civil War draft in Auglaize County, OH.

1864 

  • September 19: James Gossard enlisted in the U.S. Army.  ***Brother Philip enlisted two days earlier on September 17.***
  • November 30:  James fought in the Battle of Franklin. His brother Philip was wounded and killed.
