1844

  • Martin’s father moved the family from Alabama to Arkansas.

1850

  • October 24: The U.S. Federal Census enumerated in Wilmington Township, Union County, AR showed 8 year old Martin living with his parents and siblings. His father, Martin, was a planter who owned 11 slaves.

1860

  • August 8: The U.S. Federal Census taken in Wilmington Township, Union County, AR showed 18 year old “Josiah” living with his parents and siblings. His father, Martin, was a farmer who owned 12 slaves.

1861

  • July 27: Martin enlisted in the Confederate Army in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
  • July 27 to December. Company Muster Rolls. Present.

1862

  • January 1 to May:  Company Muster Rolls.  Present.
  • April 6: Martin’s 18 year old brother Ben was killed in action at the Battle of Shiloh.
  • July 30: Appeared on a register containing rosters of commissioned officers, Provisional Army Confederate States.
  • November and December:  Company Muster Roll.  Present.

1863

  • January 1 to November:  Company Muster Rolls.  Present.
  • September 20: Martin’s 23 year old brother Lewellyn was killed in action at Battle of Chickamauga.
  • November 1 – December 31:  Company Muster Roll.  Absent.  Remarks “Absent without leave since Dec 29.”

1864

  • April 30: Appeared on a roster of commissioned officers of the Third Brigade, Loring’s Division.
  • July 1 – September 1:  Company Muster Roll.  Present. Remarks “signs roll as commanding th Co.”
  • November 30: Martin fought in the Battle of Franklin.

1865

  • March 11: Martin appeared on a reporting of furloughs granted by Hospital Examining Board in Selma, AL. Information given: Brigade: Reynolds, Residence: Talladega, Length of furlough: thirty days, Disease: V.S. M. B., Remarks “Exm of 30 days read”

1870

  • June 18: The U.S. Federal Census showed Martin, a physician, living in Brown Township, Columbia County, AR.

1872

  • May 14: Martin married Fannie Scott in Columbia County, AR.

1874

  • September 20: Martin’s wife Fannie died.          

1875

  • October 13: Daily Arkansas Gazette, Little Rock, Arkansas. Martin attended a convention in Little Rock with his brother Philip, who was also a physician.
